I headed out with the intention of capturing the full moon on Friday night just gone. I scouted this location the evening before to see where the moon would rise and possible compositions I could go with. It was then just a matter of sitting and waiting, hoping that the clouds would cooperate.

Kananaskis Country
Alberta. Canada

This is an amazing photo! I live in Alberta and I've only seen the moon this big a few times, whereabouts in Kananaskis is this?

Hey, this photo was taken at Lower Kananaskis Lake. The moon is abnormally big in this image. I was over zealous when I initially processed it and will be reprocessing sometime soon.
Thanks for your comment

This is top notch work mate, have to laugh at the people thinking this is fake. They clearly haven't seen a full moon at moonrise before, I've seen the moon even bigger than this before, so it looks completely normal to me. Love the glow on the water from the moon as well, and the clarity throughout is superb!

So I'm just going to assume you replaced the moon at around 100mm for this one and shot it around 24mm?

Hey mate ,
Sorry for the late reply havent been on DA for a while .
I dont get a lot of traffic or comments from RB and only sell blank cards on there as will be selling prints off my website as can keep better quality and pricing if I print them myself .
I have sold a few blank card not any huge amount .
But have had some companies contact me for rights to use my images and they have found my images from RB .
It doesnt take much time to upload images there and its free publicty so I see it as no harm .

lovely composition and colours...I note a bit of haloing above the trees.
what was your focal length? I have tried this and found that at wide focal lengths the moon really is small even when rising...I normally take another shot of the moon zoomed in closer and blend it back in.

:iconlukeaustin:

Yeah that isn't actually haloing. There was a camp fire sending smoke above the tree line in that direction. I was going to darken it as I thought it may be perceived as haloing.
This image was taken at 24mm and the moon was shot again at 200mm and blended in.
Thanks

I can tell the moon isn't naturally that large. Though I guess the hard part is making it big enough to portray what you want, while keeping it realistically small.

The rest of the shot is great, as usual :)

Nothing I can think of, just that moon looks too huge to be taken with a wide angle lens, or did you blend the moon taken at a longer focal length?
Reply
:iconlukeaustin:
LukeAustin Featured By Owner Jul 2, 2010
The moon was taken at 200mm as the wide angle caused it to appear far smaller than it was in reality. As the moon just came over the horizon on this particular night it was massive, probably the largest I have witnessed. As it rises a little higher in the sky it doesn't take longer for it to appear smaller. I will admit it is probably a smidge larger here then it was in reality but only by a whisker.

I may go back on it an make it a tiny bit smaller, but in reality it was not much smaller than this. It's a shame people questions it as I tried to portray it as witnessed on the evening in person. Rather than make the moon smaller it would be "truer" to increase the size of the mountains as the wide angle decreases their real impact.

I tried to use techniques to represent what our eyes see and not what life through a wide angle lens looks like.

Thanks

Now you've explained your technique it's easy to see that it is NOT false. I've never really seen many great wide angle shots with big moons in them. It's unique and bold. I do like it :)
